Matt has worked in science journal editing, publication ethics, and research integrity for two decades. He is a member of the council of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), where he co-chairs the membership subcommittee, and he is Treasurer of the European Association of Science Editors (EASE).
He worked at three Open Access journal publishers: as an editor on the BMC-series journals and PLOS ONE, and heading the research integrity team at Hindawi. He was a Research Integrity Manager at the United Kingdom Research Integrity Office (UKRIO) and is now a freelance consultant.
